A spectacular piece of wall art, the Authentic Models Reproduction World Map 1660 is highly detailed and intricate and would make a wonderful piece of decoration in a sophisticated library or study.
17th Century Map
In the 17th century mapmaking was a flourishing business. Maps were constantly being updated with new lands discovered by navigators, merchants and explorers. These atlases and maps were in high demand by Universties and the nobility of the time, and as a result they were often very elaborate. Uncharted areas were left blank and increasingly filled in by later versions.
The first to unveil this World Map in its full extent, including the newly discovered coastal areas of Australia (New Holland), was Joan Blaeu, the famous Amsterdam publisher of maps. Blaeu produced a gigantic world map in 1648. The original consisted of 12 segments, printed from 11 engraved copperplates. Measuring 194 x 129 cm in total size, it was published c. 1690 and was dedicated to King William III (1650-1702). In many ways this map is an exact replica of the original world map that Blaeu published in 1648. At this time the only known original of Blaeu's map is part of the Special Collections Department of the University Library of Amsterdam. Authentic Models worked together with the University when creating this wonderful reproduction.
