Set of three 19th century electroplate comports modelled as icebergs with polar bears and walrus. These rare and unusual pieces were undoubtedly made to reflect the public interest in polar exploration.
The date of the design coincides with the BRITISH ARCTIC EXPEDITION of 1875-76.
The comports bear a registered design mark for March 28th 1876 and the images here show a copy of the journal entry for the design. The journal is held in the Public Record Office at Kew, London. The design was registered by Horace Woodward, Atlas Works, Great Charles Street, Birmingham.
Centrepiece 33cm wide x 30cm high overall
