Modular and corner sofas are a popular choice for homeowners. Particularly families with kids or large spaces to furnish, a modular sofa provides flexibility and premium comfort. These sofas are extremely flexible and allow you to create an arrangement that suits you and the space.
We have spoken to lots of different customers over the years and modular sofas are becoming even more popular now. Many people love to use modular sofas in their living room, family room, or even open-plan kitchen areas. Playrooms are another favoured choice too.
So how do you choose a modular sofa for your home?
Well, there are a few different factors to consider when browsing the furniture stores and it’s a good idea to work out what size you need as well.
This article will take you through the various elements you need to consider for a modular sofa and explain how to choose the right sofa.
Modular Sofa Elements
Modular sofas are like puzzles – you can move and rearrange separate pieces to suit your needs. These pieces are usually referred to as “units” or “modules” and are sold individually. To create a corner sofa from these units you would choose the individual pieces you need.
In our Gloucestershire showroom we have several different modular sofas on display that can be purchased as a “Group”. Or you can choose individual units to create your own shape and size.
Before you shop it’s important to understand these different units, so you know what to look out for. Here’s a breakdown of what to expect:
Usually there will be a Corner Box that has arms on two sides, with the remaining two sides an open seat to connect with other modules. You will need a Corner Box to create a corner, U-shape, or L-shaped sofa.
Then there are Chaise Units which are extending single seats with one arm, 1-Arm Sofa Units that are individual seats with an arm on one side (you can choose from Left-Hand-Facing or Right-Hand-Facing for these).
To fill in any gaps to your modular sofa arrangement, Armless Units are also available which are designed to extend the sofa sides where required.
What Size Modular Sofa?
The best way to work out what size sofa will fit in your space is to draw a sketch. It doesn’t need to be anything fancy, just a box with dimensions will do. Measure up your space and draw it out on a piece of paper so you can visually see what you’re planning. Remember to add window and door locations too!
From your sketch plan and measurements, you should be able to see what space you have available for a modular sofa. For example, you’ll know how wide the sofa should be on both sides.
Then, when you are furniture shopping, you can work out whether the modular sofa you’re looking at will fit within the space you have.
Top Tip: Never go furniture shopping without knowing what size your room is!
This is a common mistake many homeowners make but having a little sketch of your room to hand can make all the difference when looking around furniture stores.
Understanding the Filling
As with any sofa purchase there are different cushion fillings available that will vary by manufacturer and range. The most common cushion filling is foam or feather.
Foam filling will provide a comfortable seat but will bounce back afterwards. It will also support your posture and is generally much firmer than a feather filling.
Feather filled cushions area great for those that love to properly sink into a sofa!
For the ultimate comfort and longevity, choose a feather wrapped foam cushion where possible. This will ensure the cushions retain their shape over the years but also bounce back when you sit on them.
How to Choose a Modular Sofa
Choosing a modular sofa for your home may seem like an impossible task. However, once you have established the space in which you’d like the sofa to be positioned and followed the steps above in the “What Size Modular Sofa?” section, you should have a much better idea as to what you need.
Then, it’s about choosing a sofa range that has flexible unit options in a style that you love and is made with the right filling!
There are lots of different designs of modular sofas available. Including loose cover looking ones that suit a more farmhouse inspired or rustic home, or there are sleek and contemporary designs that look wonderful in contemporary spaces.
